MotoGP Brno: Marquez: 'Great work' after early worries
“This morning I was a bit worried because I start to have the feeling of the first part of the season” – Marc Marquez.
Two falls and the fastest FP2 lap time sums up reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez's Friday at Brno, when the Repsol Honda star took a tumble in each session.
The Spaniard ran wide and then fell in the gravel on his way to second place in FP1, then lost the front of his RCV in the closing minutes of a roasting afternoon practice.
Marquez remained fastest in FP2, but was 0.014s shy of Jorge Lorenzo's morning best and believes the Yamaha rider has an advantage of around two tenths per second in terms of race pace.
“With the hot temperature everybody was struggling and have many crashes,” Marquez said of his afternoon tumble. “But when I crashed I was trying the hardest option front tyre, it was only the second lap and maybe it was the tyre or just the track. Tomorrow we will check again.”
Marquez looked like he might pull off a repeat of his miracle save during testing at Brno in 2014, when was able to save a similar front end slide with his elbow.
“I tried!” he smiled. “It was sliding for a long time and when I started to feel the burning here [on arm] I say 'ok, it is the time!' [to let go]. I tried, but it was not possible this time.
“Until that point I was really happy with my practice because compared to this morning we improved and this morning the track was faster because it was cooler. So we improved some points. Still Lorenzo is in front. Lorenzo is two tenths faster than us but we are working in the correct way.”
Brno has similar characteristics to Mugello, where Marquez suffered one of his worst weekends in terms of the rear-wheel braking slides that dogged the latest RC213V.
Since reverting to a 2014 chassis at Assen, Marquez has scored 70 out of a possible 75 points. But was 'a bit worried' after encountering similar problems this morning.
“This morning in FP1 I was a bit worried because I start to have the feeling of the first part of the season,” he said. “But we did a great work for this afternoon and improved a lot.
“At Mugello and Montmelo I did not have the pace, but this afternoon I was able to be more constant with good lap times. Only Lorenzo was faster than us, but we were closer. That means the potential is there. OK maybe the [braking] problem will affect us more at this circuit, but we are working on it.”
Also a factor is that the Bridgestone tyre allocation is slightly different this weekend, compared to those available at Assen, Sachsenring and Indy.
“What is true is that with the tyre we used at Assen, Sachsenring and Indy maybe the problems were less. But for everybody it is the same and we have to work hard because last year we were able to use this tyre well and it was better for everybody.”
Meanwhile the sweltering track temperature, which topped 50-degrees this afternoon, means that the race pace could be significantly slower than last year.
“For me it looks like if the weather is like this it will be really difficult to do the same pace as the race last year because at the moment we are maybe six or eighth tenths slower per lap.”
Marquez is seeking a third victory in a row, at the same track where his run of ten straight wins came to an end last season, as he seeks to further erode the 56-point gap to Rossi.
