Marc Marquez got a close look at Valentino Rossi's Yamaha by seizing the opportunity to follow the MotoGP title leader at the end of Brno qualifying.

After Marquez's own pole push was over, he tucked in behind Rossi as the Italian went on to claim the final place on the front of the grid.

"I saw he did already the lap time and when I overtake him for sure he come to see the potential. I think that it was something quite clever because I cannot stop! Because I am in my [qualifying] lap," smiled Rossi.

"So he did something clever. If he gave me 20 metres more I would be more happy because I don't feel the noise! To keep the concentration is not fantastic but he did his job."

Had it been free practice, Rossi would simply have backed off once he became aware that Marquez was behind him. Meanwhile the Spaniard was encouraged by what he saw.

"In free practice it's impossible to follow them. But in qualifying I'd already done my fastest lap, then he overtook me and I tried to follow him to see which points he and Yamaha are faster," Marquez confirmed. "I already saw, but also I understand we are not far because behind him I felt comfortable. So we will see tomorrow in the race if I can keep this way."

Asked if he would have done the same to Marquez, Rossi replied: "Usually I try but he goes! You know it is important to understand the level of the other guys because everybody tries to follow the other top guys during practice, but is always very difficult. He had a good opportunity. After I speak with him and I try to understand where I am fast or slow!"

The session ended with Rossi's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo on pole by 0.074s from Marquez, with Rossi 0.364s behind in third.

Marquez, winner of the last two races, is 56-points from Rossi and 47 points from Lorenzo.
