Maverick Vi?ales was one of the stars of Saturday afternoon as he qualified his Suzuki GSX-RR in seventh place around the undulating 3.3 mile Brno track despite having more than 20bhp less to utilise than his MotoGP rivals.

The class rookie showed flashes of brilliance around the Czech circuit on Saturday morning, when he spent much of the session in fourth after lapping on a medium rear tyre.

Come qualifying, Vi?ales was the lone Suzuki in Q2 as team-mate Aleix Espargaro was unable to place higher than fifth in Q1 as he struggled aboard the soft rubber.

To finish just 0.019s off the second row was a superb achievement and the 20-year old is delighted with the confidence he has in the front end of his machine.

"Of course here it's difficult because we have the uphill where we lose a lot," he said. "Also the straight. Anyway I feel nice with the bike. I feel really good on the front so I can keep the corner speed really good and there is where I win. I was behind Iannone in the change of direction and going through the corner I was much more fast.

"Anyway, we know where we lose. I think the team is doing a really nice job because the team from Indianapolis are improving all the time. Also, with the hard tyre. Now I can keep the pace. FP4 I was really angry because we try the 38 [hard front tyre] and the bike doesn't like. So I was feeling that our set-up was really bad for the hot condition but when I try the 33 [medium] the lap time comes again so easy so finally after FP4 I get a good feeling for tomorrow."

"The bike is working really nice on the bumps. I feel it but it's really good there. Also I feel the confidence going into the corner. We feel that our braking points are really good."

Having completed a race distance on the medium front tyre, Vi?ales is confident he won't have any problems in terms of terminal tyre wear.

"I don't think so. This morning we did the race distance, even two laps more, and I did a 57.2s. I think for tomorrow it's going to be good. [The rear tyre drops] A little bit. I think from lap ten it start to drop but tomorrow we will try to be as smooth as we can with the gas to try and save the tyre until the end."
