Andrea Iannone powered his way to eighth position on the first day of MotoGP free practice at Silverstone before stating he would use Ducati's updated engine for Sunday's race.

Continuing the fine form which has seen him place a comfortable fourth in the world championship, Iannone displayed a pace that looks as though it could challenge for a podium place.

Both his Ducati GP15s are fitted with the updated fairing this weekend but only one has the updated engine that he opted not to race in Brno.

"This afternoon I think I have a really good feeling with the bike," he said. "This morning I have a really good feeling with the bike, so I'm really happy for my first practice, I work really good with my team, I improve lap by lap my performance with the bike. So I'm really charged for the second practice for this afternoon.

"But in the beginning, not so bad, I improve a little bit my lap time, so this is good. But after the first exit, I come back to the box, and I change a little bit the setting in the bike, and when I go out and I push, I improve a lot my lap time. But in the second lap I crash. At the moment, I'm not sure this modification is better or not, and I want to check better with my team. And I'm focused for tomorrow."

"For sure in this track the new engine is better, because have a really long straight, is a really fast track, is for sure in the race I use this. The packaging of the new fairing is also better."

The result came even after Iannone suffered a rare spill after he lost feeling with the front at the end of the Hangar Straight.

"Is a surprise for me. Because I have a good feeling, and when I arrive at corner 7, I brake, I go with the bike inside the corner, and when I touch the throttle and before I pick up the bike, the front close and I crash. So this is a little bit of a surprise, but I think with this bumps in this track, there a lot of bumps, so it is possible the cause of this crash, or the setting is the optimal setting.

"I change a little bit the suspension, the spring in the rear and front. So at the first moment, I improve a lot, and after one lap I crash. I want to check better with my team, my engineers. But I have a lot of tranquility for tomorrow."
