MotoGP Misano: Crutchlow: It was a complete lottery
Cal Crutchlow admits to using Andrea Dovizioso as a marker in the changeable conditions, rues not pitting earlier
Cal Crutchlow labeled the treacherous conditions “a complete lottery” as he rode to an eleventh place finish in the eventful MotoGP race at Misano.
Having played around with different bike set-ups throughout the weekend, Crutchlow admitted to being overly revved up for the start, causing him to jump the start before stopping sufficiently to avoid a penalty.
From there he made up positions until he began circulating with Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso, a man he used as a marker to judge when to pit.
While he pitted for the second time on lap 18, Crutchlow exited on a used rear tyre from Saturday, which offered little rear grip when compared to the men with whom he was battling.
“I'm not too happy with the finishing position,” said Crutchlow. “It was a lottery, a complete lottery. I did what Dovi did. I knew he was fast in the dry and fast in the rain. At one point I was the second fastest guy on track in the rain so we knew our pace in the wet was good. If it had have rained again I would have benefited and maybe we would have been on the podium.
“It's a little bit luck of the draw. I came in on the same lap as either Vale or Jorge but it was four laps too late. We lost about 11 seconds a lap at one point. If you're losing that in three or four laps it's difficult to recover.
“Honestly, I didn't have a bad feeling at the start. I jumped the start then was hesitant on the first 3 laps. Then it rained, I felt good but when I changed to my last bike I didn't have a good feeling at all. I had a used rear tyre in from yesterday so it had been through a cycle. Most of the other guys that passed me took a new tyre or kept the one from the start of the race.
“But we're in control of when we come in. I had a pit board telling me when to come in but I did so when Dovi came in. Whatever happens he's always strong in the rain and this weekend he would have been in the top five had it stayed dry. It was a disappointing final position but it could have been a hell of a lot better if we pitted earlier. It could have been a hell of a lot worse, it was a lottery.
The Englishman, who remains tenth in the overall standings, claimed he was unable to take any positives from the race. For Aragon, he said, he and the team will revert to his RC213V's base setting.
“I don't take anything from today's race,” he continued. “Nothing. I said to the team I was so revved for the first five laps. I was so revved I jumped the start by a second. We need to go to Aragon, go back to the real base setting of the bike and go from there. This weekend we've played around quite a lot, we had nothing to lose. Some things worked, others didn't.”
Crutchlow was also quick to praise the efforts of fellow Brits Bradley Smith and Scott Redding, who ensured two British riders stood on a premier class podium for the first time since 1979.
However, in Crutchlow's opinion, the fact Redding placed third despite crashing early in the race underlined the ridiculous nature of the race.
“Marc was obviously the fastest guy because he won. Brad did fantastic to stay out and get on the podium. Scott did very well and congratulations on his first podium. I've never seen someone crash and it benefit them like that. He also pitted at the right time with the rain tyre to go back to the slicks.”
