MotoGP Misano: Dovi, Iannone rue pit stop miscalculations
'Both switches I didn't do at the right time, and I will take the blame for that: I'm really disappointed about it' - Andrea Dovizioso.
Ducati riders Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso both felt they blew their chance of challenging for the podium at Misano by miscalculating their pit stop strategies.
Iannone and Dovi finished seventh and eighth respectively at the Marco Simoncelli Circuit but were ultimately disappointed with their results, staying out on the track for too long before deciding to pull in to pit lane to switch bikes.
“Today was a really strange day because it was crazy conditions. On a dry track with dry tyres I had a good pace and a good feeling with the bike and I followed Dani [Pedrosa],” said Iannone.
“After six or seven laps the rain arrived and I come back to the box to change bikes. With the wet bike, the feeling is good but after six laps with this bike, the [front] tyre is destroyed and the feel is really bad.
“I am disappointed because when I saw my board to come in [for his second stop], I arrived one lap later and I am disappointed for this,” he added.
“I made a mistake and probably my final result would have been different if I had decided to come in before.”
Dovizioso, who briefly inherited the lead when most riders entered pit lane to switch to their wet set-up machines during the first round of stops, also rued his approach, admitting he mistimed both of his pit-stops.
“It was a crazy race and I am very disappointed because I changed the bike in both situations and today my strategy was very bad,” Dovizioso said.
“I stayed out for too many laps before I changed the bike and I'm very sorry for the team because they worked really hard to improve the speed.
“I'm sorry because today we had a chance to stay on the podium.
“Before the first stop I didn't feel the rain was too heavy and when I saw [Andrea] Iannone go into the box, I decided to continue but the rain became heavier and that lap was very, very slow before I came in,” he added.
“Both switches I didn't do at the right time, and I will take the blame for that: I'm really disappointed about it, because we could have got a good result.
“What happened today normally never happens but it is not an excuse, it is the reality and I was wrong.”
There was huge disappointment for Michele Pirro, who had impressed with his performance during practice and qualifying in his second wildcard appearance this season.
Pirro, who qualified fifth, experienced a technical problem on the grid and was forced to start from pit lane with his second GP15 machine, which was set up in wet weather trim.
Nine laps into the race, the Ducati test rider was forced to retire with his wet tyres completely destroyed.
“Let's say that today was clearly not my day. Until the race the weekend had been going perfectly, but on the grid the bike didn't start because of a technical problem and I had to set off from the pit-lane with my wet bike,” Pirro said.
“It could have been a great day for me, because I felt really good and I was counting on doing well, but in the end I missed out in a big way.
“I'm clearly disappointed but I have to put it behind me, so a big thanks to the guys in the team who did a perfect job.
“For someone like me who doesn't have many chances of racing in MotoGP, today maybe the conditions were just right for a good result, but it's obvious that I still have to suffer some more.”
