Pol Espargaro was lucky to escape injury when he fell at the end of the back straight in the closing stages of Sunday's Japanese MotoGP.

After dropping as low as 15th during the middle stages, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider was closing on brother Aleix for eleventh when he lost the front end and was pitched spectacularly down the track.

"I was continuously battling with my M1 as the front tyre was dropping more and more," Espargaro said.

"I had closed in on my brother and would have loved to pass him but unfortunately, the front tyre locked and I fell whilst braking into turn 11 with only one and a half laps to go, which is a big pity as I definitely didn't want to end my weekend in this way.

"I hit my head on the barrier during this incident, but I've undertaken a medical check and luckily I walked away unhurt. Another positive is that we are now flying to Australia, which is my favourite track and we were strong there last year, so I'm looking forward to next week and getting back on my Yamaha YZR-M1."
