Dani Pedrosa has admitted he is yet to find a clear development direction for the 2016 Honda engine as he continues to work through the myriad of changes on the RC213V.
Having been unable to assess HRC's new motor effectively on Wednesday because of the unpredictable nature of the new Magneti Marelli electronics, Pedrosa remains wary of going in a certain development direction for next year.
The Spaniard, who won two of the final four races in 2016, set a fastest time of 1m 40.10s after posting 53 laps throughout the day. While the feelings in all areas were slightly improved when compared to Wednesday, Pedrosa still needs to amass more information before choosing how to move forward.
“Today was pretty similar,” he said on Thursday evening. “We've been testing a little bit the engines, and also the electronics. I think from the starting point of yesterday to today, we had better performance in the way of riding in this track, and also of the electronic setting. So I could compare and could have a little bit more information about the differences in the engine and in the electronics.
“So I can say that for the engine, still we don't have a specific answer, we are still working to get the best setting. But today I had a little bit more feeling, I could understand more. And also with the new electronics compared to Valencia, yesterday somebody asked me if they are more in order, because in Valencia it was not going well, so yes, it's true, here it's a little bit better.
“About tyres, I didn't test any tire, so the same tires as yesterday. And pretty much this was it, the lap times are not specifically good, but I can say that in general, the other lap times are similar, so I don't know if it's the track or the tyres."
Asked whether he was frustrated by the length of time it was taking to assess the new engine, Pedrosa stated it was a difficult situation to be in.
“I wouldn't use this word [frustrating], but sure it's a little bit more difficult, because again, we don't want to make the mistake, we are trying to make the correct choice for next year. And sometimes, when you have a new engine and the feeling comes right immediately, then the decision is more easy to take.
“But this time, the differences are a little bit, so win and lose, win and lose. So we must take care for what we choose for next year, because in one point, we cannot change. We have to be really open now, and take the time.
“With the electronics, in Valencia it was everything, the wheelie, the traction control in the middle of the corner, but here everything was more smooth, and working together with the throttle. So a little bit more understanding when you are on the bike, and the bike is not making such big moments like we had in Valencia. But still, we have to go more deep, we need more experience for these controls.”
