Jorge Lorenzo was left cursing the intermittent conditions that greeted riders at a blustery Phillip Island on Wednesday as he was unable to complete more than 24 laps around the seaside track.

Fastest by some margin at the first test of 2016 in Sepang, Lorenzo was inside the top three in wet conditions during the first part of day one in Australia.

As the sun came out and several riders improved, the reigning world champion was pushed down the order to end the day 16th as a "strange feeling" with Michelin's slick tyres prevented him from bettering his 1m 39.8s time.

"It was a frustrating day for everyone," said Lorenzo. "We need to make some laps to see how is the bike with the new electronics and the Michelin tyres.

"Finally in the last exit we left with the slicks. It was a strange feeling. Really, I don't know what is going on for the moment. Tomorrow we have to see in the full day because we don't have time to understand.

"Normally you can see in the Superbike race it's good weather [at this time of year] but today we had no luck with it. There were mixed conditions that were not really completely wet and not really perfect for the dry.

"It was difficult to ride in these conditions but it was important to set-up the bike. But finally we had only two laps on the slicks. It was a very strange feeling. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, with a complete day and good conditions to see how is working the bike with the Michelins."

Like team-mate Valentino Rossi, Lorenzo's garage contains a hybrid version of his 2015 machine along with a new 2016 spec machine.

The Majorcan continued, "For the moment today we focus on the 2015 in the wet and also the dry."
