For the second time in 2016, Pramac Ducati's Danilo Petrucci finished a day of official MotoGP testing on top of the timesheets.
The previous occasion had been day two at Sepang, when the Italian set the pace as red flags were raised for Loris Baz's accident, after which the soft rear tyre was withdrawn.
Wednesday at Phillip Island then saw Petrucci shoot to the top when rain showers clearedm offering the chance to ride on slick tyres.
The Silverstone runner-up set a best lap of 1m 31.764s, which was 3.5s off the (Bridgestone) race lap record but a substantial 0.7s clear of next best Maverick Vinales (Suzuki).
Speaking in the paddock afterwards, Petrucci explained that he still needs to adapt to the characteristics of the new Michelin rubber.
“We didn't expect to ride in the dry today but at the end the track was pretty good, if windy,” he said. “We wanted to do a longer run but Michelin said not to do more than 15 laps, half of the race. We hope the weather is better tomorrow so we can keep working on the bike and tyre.
“I have to still understand the behaviour of the tyre, because I think I brake a little too much with this tyre and I'm always trying to load the front. So I think I'm still riding a little bit like for the Bridgestone, braking hard and pushing a lot on the front tyre.
“There is a lot of grip on the rear, I found that at Sepang and here is the same. This is very good but on the other hand it is difficult to have a good load on the front. And at Phillip Island you only brake hard for two corners. The others are so fast and it is difficult to load the front. So now we have to understand this.
“We also have to understand the durability during the laps, but maybe we will make a race simulation only on the last day in Qatar. Because we have a lot of things still to try and now it is less important to make a race simulation.
“Anyway it was important to ride in the dry today so we can start tomorrow directly with a set-up to work from and try to find new solutions.”
Team-mate Scott Redding was fourth fastest.
