MotoGP: Smith reaping benefits of fully seamless gearbox

Bradley Smith now has a fully seamless gearbox at his disposal for MotoGP 2016, believes it helps him greatly in corner entry.
Bradley Smith has revealed that he has a fully seamless gearbox for the 2016 MotoGP season and was happy to hear that the factory Yamaha riders could opt to start the season on a package similar to his.

Having finished sixth in the world championship in 2015, the Englishman only had access to seamless upshifts before but now also has the seamless downshifts at his disposal, a feature that is greatly of benefit in corner entry.

“It's nice,” said the 25-year old, who finished Thursday's test session at Phillip Island tenth fastest, three places ahead of team-mate Pol Espargaro. “[Last year I was using] The seamless upshifts and now we've got it both ways. I got told at the Yamaha presentation [in Barcelona] and I was walking around with a smile on my face, going, 'I can't wait!'

“It makes it easier for us to set it up. We're more consistent going into corners. With obviously the new electronics it's important to have as many of these little niceties as possible. It's good that Yamaha was able to do that for us.”

As Movistar Yamaha riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi show a slight preference for a new Yamaha frame that resembles the '15 version which Smith will use in 2016, the Englishman admitted his set-up could be closer to the factory men, for the first four races of the new season at least.

“There hasn't been a lot of information trickling through but it's a lot closer that it has been in the pace. That's good for us. It's good for our mentality and nice to know you're on something similar. If that's the case it will be important to take advantage of that in the first few races, to look at where Jorge and Valentino are and that means we're able to use their settings or guidelines more than in the past.

“We weren't able to do things that they could. I expect after the first four races, after Jerez, on the Monday test, you'll turn up and there will be a few things coming for the other guys. It's puts us in the frame of mind where you think that you have the same package. The half a second that I'm behind today is coming from me and I can overlay the data to work on those small details. It's in my hands to do the job right and take advantage of my package being closer than it has been in the past.”

Pleased to hear that Bradley will have kit nearer the factory guys this year. He seems to be doing good work in the tests a nd hopefully it will translate into performance in the races. As he says though that will only last till the first monday test of the season when the works guys will get more updates. Looking forward to seeing how Bradley goes.
