Moto2: Surgery for Alex Marquez after testing spill

Alex Marquez injured during private Moto2 test at Jerez.
Alex Marquez has undergone surgery after fracturing a bone in his left wrist during a Moto2 testing accident at Jerez on Saturday.

The Estrella Galicia Marc VDS rider sustained a fracture to his left triquetrum – one of the eight small carpal bones in the wrist - after crashing heavily at the Sito Pons corner.

Marquez was admitted to the Hospital University Quirón Dexeus in Barcelona for further examination, where this (Sunday) morning surgery took place to stabilise the fracture with a titanium screw.

Doctors will monitor Marquez's recovery and rehabilitation over the next seven days, after which a decision will made as to when the former Moto3 World Champion will be fit enough to resume testing.

Alex, younger brother of MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, is preparing for his second season in the intermediate Moto2 category.

The first official Moto2 test takes place at the same Jerez circuit from March 2-4.
