Moto2's opening sessions of the Qatar Grand Prix weekend saw Jonas Folger rise to the top of the timesheets as the Dynavolt Intact GP rider set a pacey 1m 59.566 near the start of the second practice session, perfectly timed for the optimum track performance.

The German rider impressed by continually setting times under two minutes as the track conditions deteriorated.

Folger was the winner of the Qatar Grand Prix in 2015.

Sam Lowes sits in second, both in the second session and overall after a day mixed fortunes for the British rider.

His times showed great pace but crashes in both sessions hampered Sam Lowes progress, the Gresini rider pushing hard after dominating testing.

Alex Rins finished the day in third for Paginas Amarillas HP 40, bucking the trend and fighting the change in conditions with his late improvement after struggling a little in FP1 where he finished outside the top ten.

Reigning Moto2 champion Johann Zarco quietly worked away on his Ajo Motorsport machine for fourth, with the fifth best time in FP2 set by EG 0,0 Marc VDS rider Franco Morbidelli.

Tom Luthi finished FP2 sixth after not improving on his FP1 time, that effort left the Swiss Interwetten Team Rider a little higher when the times were combined, in fourth overall.

Lorenzo Baldassarri was the seventh best rider on the opening day for the Forward team, with Taka Nakagami setting the eighth best time for Idemitsu Honda Team Asia and Simone Corsi ninth for Speed Up, the first non-Kalex entry to grace the timesheets.

Alex Marquez completes the top ten best times in a competitive field where the first eighteen riders in FP2 were all within a second of the best time.

The top rookie on day one was Luca Marini (Forward Racing), another rider who improved as the second session closed to move into 13th.

Britain's Danny Kent finished 22nd just behind his Leopard team-mate Miguel Oliveira who's Moto2 practice debut ended with a 20th place finish.

Mattia Pasini was the only other faller over the two sessions, his bike sliding away at turn one in FP2 with no chance of a return to the action.
