Valentino Rossi is hoping for a repeat of his 2015 podium at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, which has been a historically tough venue for Yamaha.

Rossi took full advantage when Andrea Iannone wiped out his Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso on the final lap in Argentina to gain two places, crossing the line for an unexpected runner-up finish on the YZR-M1.

The Italian is second in the championship standings, eight points behind Marquez after the first two rounds, and hopes to be in a position to challenge for the top three to stay in touch at the top of the table.

"I am happy to return to Texas and to race at CoTA. We have to work hard in Austin because it's crucial to understand quickly how bike, tyres, electronics and this track work together," said Rossi.

"Furthermore in the last laps of the race I'm not very strong so we need to improve with the bike on these tyres. Historically it is a difficult circuit for us and for Yamaha, but last year I could arrive on the podium so I will try also this year."
