Moto2 Austin, USA: Rins holds pole in red flag session

An early lap by Alex Rins stole pole position in Saturday's qualifying session for the Moto2 Grand Prix of the Americas, during a session halted for an injured Efren Vazquez.
Alex Rins delivered a run of constantly fast laps, the best of which came just ten minutes into the Moto2 qualifying session at a now sunny Austin.

The Pons man went on to secure his fourth Moto2 pole with a time of 2m 08.880s, the only rider to go below the 2m09s barrier. His lap is also a new record for the Moto2 class at the Circuit of the Americas after having already broken the old lap record in practice.

The Spaniard has a strong record at the Texas track, having previously won in Moto3 and finishing third last year in his debut Moto2 season.

His main competition set their best laps as the session resumed for a ten minute rush for a hot lap.

The action had been red-flagged when Efren Vazquez crashed at turn seven so the medical team could tend to his injuries. The JP Moto Malaysia Suter rider was removed in an ambulance but was later reported to be conscious and talking in the medical centre.

On resumption reigning champion Johann Zarco showed his composure for second finishing his final fun as the flag waved just over 0.2seconds behind Rins for Ajo Motorsport.

That lap demoted Sam Lowes to third though the Gresini riding Briton was confident of his race pace as he was able to lap consistently fast both sides of the red flag as well as being fastest in the rain-affected final practice, with more changeable weather predicted.

Lowes will be looking to emulate his success at the circuit last season where the Brit took his first win in the Moto2 class.

Row two starts with a welcome return to form for Dominique Aegerter, the Interwetten rider getting to grips with his change to Kalex for a superb fourth, making an impact on qualifying for the first time this season having run the session in contention for a front row start.

Current championship Leader Tom Luthi is just one place behind his team-mate in fifth, with a superb last lap from Taka Nakagami moving him up to sixth for Idemitsu Honda Team Asia.

Jonas Folger was a frustrated seventh for Dynavolt Intact GP, one place ahead of his on-track rival, Simone Corsi, who lines up in eighth for Speed Up, the only non-Kalex entry in the top ten.

Franco Morbidelli sits ninth on the grid, with Sandro Cortese completing the top ten on the second Dynavolt entry.

Britain's Danny Kent starts 16th for Leopard Racing, one place ahead of Axel Pons who managed 15th on his birthday for AGR Team.

Kent's Team-mate Miguel Oliveira was the best of the rookies down in 20th position.
