MotoGP Spain: Last-gasp Rossi pips Marquez to top FP3

A fast final run from Valentino Rossi is enough to push Marc Marquez into second in FP3; four British/Irish riders outside the top ten.
A last-gasp Valentino Rossi lap was enough to see the Italian topple Marc Marquez off the top of the timesheets by 0.046s in the third MotoGP free practice session at Jerez.

Rossi spent the majority of the session behind Marquez and weekend pacesetter Jorge Lorenzo in the classification, until he fitted new rubber in the final ten minutes, to post a fastest time of 1m 39.244s, the best lap of the weekend.

Marquez was second, with old Moto2 sparring partner Pol Espargaro a surprise third. The Tech 3 Yamaha man, who ended Friday in a distant 14th, tucked in behind Repsol Honda man for the final five minutes to climb inside the top three.

Lorenzo also improved late on to push Dani Pedrosa – the man who led with just over four minutes to go - back to fifth. Maverick Viñales completed the top six after spending chunks of the session behind and, indeed, in a scrap with team-mate Aleix Espargaro.

Andrea Dovizioso was the first of the Ducatis in seventh, with the elder Espargaro brother a place behind. Andrea Iannone was ninth and Hector Barbera tenth, meaning seven of the top-ten hail from Spain.

The four British/Irish riders in the 2016 field will contest Q1 on Saturday afternoon after placing outside the top ten. Cal Crutchlow headed the quartet in 13th, with Bradley Smith (14th), Eugene Laverty (15th) and Scott Redding (16th) close behind.
