Andrea Iannone once again showed his outright speed over a single lap at Mugello by topping a frenetic MotoGP FP3 session at Mugello, which saw the top 17 riders covered by 1.057s.

As the final ten minutes brought the usual quasi-qualifying run, the surprise placeings of Yonny Hernandez (fourth), Danilo Petrucci (sixth) and Michele Pirro (tenth) pushed a host of top names outside the top ten and into Saturday afternoon's Q1 session.

Furthermore, after the session finished, it was confirmed that Tito Rabat's first Italian Grand Prix in the premier class had been brought to a premature conclusion after an early fall at turn 13 fractured his left collarbone. The fast left also claimed Pol Espargaro several minutes later.

At the front Iannone's lap may have been a full half second under Marc Marquez's official lap record but the Repsol Honda man was almost equally as fast. Marquez was just 0.089s slower in second with Maverick Vi?ales salvaging a spot in Q2 with his final lap, which was enough for third.

Hernandez used Marquez's tow to brilliant effect to place fourth, just ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, who is failing to stamp his authority on the weekend in a similar way to a year ago. Petrucci's sixth and Bradley Smith's excellent seventh was enough to push Valentino Rossi - sporting a new helmet with the word 'MUGIALLO' (giallo means yellow in Italian) above the visor - down to eighth.

Dani Pedrosa was ninth, a place ahead of Michele Pirro, while Cal Crutchlow was the first of the big names to miss out on the top ten cut.

The LCR Honda rider will be joined in Q1 by Andrea Dovizioso (twelfth), Scott Redding (13th), Hector Barbera (14th), Jack Miller (15th), Aleix Espargaro (16th) and Pol Espargaro (17th).
