Maverick Vi?ales demonstrated an impressive turn of pace in morning warm-up at Mugello as he bids to push for a first victory in the MotoGP class.

A day on from narrowly missing out on pole position, Vi?ales led Andrea Dovizioso by 0.14s and Marc Marquez by 0.35s, suggesting Valentino Rossi was right to point toward the young Spaniard as having the potential to challenge for 25 points.

Vi?ales' fine morning was in contrast to both team-mate Aleix Espargaro - who fell without injury at frightening speed at turn 13 - and Jorge Lorenzo, whose Movistar Yamaha's engine suffered a spectacular blow up as he crested the rise toward turn one.

Lorenzo ended the session in fourth, with Valentino Rossi showing a very similar pace a place behind in fifth. Third placed qualified Andrea Iannone was sixth fastest.

Pol Espargaro put his two crashes on Saturday behind him, with brother Aleix - up and walking after his spill - eighth fastest. Danilo Petrucci was eighth and Dani Pedrosa rounded out the top ten.
