MotoGP Netherlands: Iannone leads Ducati one-two in cloudy FP1

Forced to start at the back of the grid for this round, Andrea Iannone shows Ducati's potential around Assen; he and Andrea Dovizioso top FP1.
As if keen to prove a point, Andrea Iannone came out fighting at Assen and sped to a considerable advantage over the MotoGP field in FP1 on a grey, warm morning in the Netherlands.

Showing the serious potential of Ducati machinery around the historic venue, Iannone led team-mate Andrea Dovizioso by 0.226s. With Pramac Ducati's Scott Redding placing fourth and Danilo Petrucci fifth, there was serious reason for cheer in the Bologna garages.

No matter how fast he is through the weekend, Iannone will start Sunday's race from last on the grid as punishment for his collision with Jorge Lorenzo in Barcelona.

Ducati's strengths were contrasted against the initial struggles of Honda riders. Marc Marquez was the best placed of those in eleventh, with Cal Crutchlow (twelfth) and Dani Pedrosa (13th) not far behind.

Pol Espargaro was the first non-Ducati rider in third, 0.3s off Iannone's fastest time. Fellow Yamaha men Jorge Lorenzo (sixth) and Valentino Rossi (seventh) weren't far off, with the latter focusing primarily on working with Michelin's harder rear tyre toward the end of the session.

Making use of Suzuki's new chassis for this weekend, Maverick Viñales, 0.410s off the fastest time of the morning with Bradley Smith ninth. Hector Barbera completed the top ten.
