MotoGP Netherlands: Lorenzo: We need to find something different

'We can still improve the bike in some areas and tomorrow we will try a completely different setting to see what we feel' - Jorge Lorenzo.
Movistar Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo says he will pursue a different direction with the set-up of his M1 on Saturday after struggling to match the fastest times on day one at Assen.

The reigning world champion is four tenths behind pacesetters Andrea Iannone and Valentino Rossi, setting his best lap in 1m 33.991s in the afternoon to finish the day in fifth place.

Lorenzo, who left Catalunya empty-handed last time out after being rammed from behind by Iannone, says T4 in particular is causing him problems.

“In the morning, the conditions were not for normal practice so I was not pushing 100 per-cent. Also, some riders put in different tyres, like soft rear, but this afternoon I was more competitive,” he said.

“We are three or four tenths off pace and as I rider I still don't understand the best line to be a little bit faster especially at T4. We can still improve the bike in some areas and tomorrow we will try a completely different setting to see what we feel and at this moment we need to go in a different direction.”

Lorenzo used the new Yamaha chassis after testing the upgrade in the post-race test at Catalunya but he remains undecided over which option he will race with on Sunday.

“In Montmelo I felt quite a big difference but here I couldn't find so much difference [with the chassis], also because we are using a different setting, so I couldn't compare,” he said.

“Tomorrow we will try again and try to decide for Sunday and I will try to have a little bit more time to understand, to be clear.

“In the last three or four years I don't have the speed here that I would like and we need to try to fight for the victory. We still have more time tomorrow to practice and I want to improve and improve the bike to be more competitive and I think we can,” said Lorenzo.

“Since 2014, with my natural line at T4 and the last chicane, I'm not fast enough and we need to try something different.”

Italian rider Iannone will start the race from the back of the grid after being hit with a penalty following his collision with Lorenzo, who feels it will be difficult for the Ducati rider to work his way through the field.

“At this moment Ducati are very competitive and at Iannone will start from the back of the grid, but if he keeps his pace from today to Sunday and I cannot improve, maybe he can recover,” he said.

“But if I improve my pace I think it will be very difficult to recover those positions in the first part of the race.”

Lorenzo also revealed that Iannone visited his motorhome following the incident at Catalunya to apologise.
