Andrea Dovizioso has grabbed pole position for the Dutch TT following a frantic MotoGP qualifying session held in the damp at Assen.

The Ducati rider - fastest in the dry in FP3 - was 0.7 seconds clear of last year's winner Valentino Rossi on the Movistar Yamaha in Q2, posting his best lap in 1m 45.246s.

It is Dovizioso's fourth pole of his career and his third for Ducati, the last of which he achieved in Qatar last year.

Britain's Scott Redding secured a stunning front row start on the Pramac Ducati in third - his maiden top-three start in MotoGP - as he finished a further three tenths back on Rossi following a lap in 1m 46.312s.

Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo, who failed to score any points at Catalunya after being taken out by Andrea Iannone, faces an uphill struggle after qualifying on the fourth row in 10th place on the Movistar Yamaha, 2.6 seconds down on the benchmark set by Dovizioso. Lorenzo came off during FP3 and walked away gingerly from the incident.

Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez, who slid off on his out lap at turn 8 and quickly borrowed a scooter to return to the pits to switch to his second RCV, heads up row two in fourth.

The world championship leader, who survived a massive moment on the home straight in FP3, clocked a time in 1m 46.430s as he finished Q2 1.1 seconds from the top.

Marquez in joined on the second row by Cal Crutchlow on the LCR Honda and Colombian Yonny Hernandez (Aspar Ducati).

Dani Pedrosa failed to make it into Q2 and is languishing in a lowly 15th position on the factory Repsol Honda, while Maverick Vinales qualified in 11th place on the Ecstar Suzuki GSX-RR after also coming off on his out lap at turn 5.

Vinales and Lorenzo are joined on the fourth row of the grid by Hector Barbera (Avintia Ducati).

Row three is spearheaded by Pol Espargaro - fastest in Q1 from Hernandez - on the Monster Yamaha Tech M1, whose brother Aleix slotted into eighth on the Ecstar Suzuki ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Pramac Ducati).

Italian rider Iannone had qualified ninth fastest but will start from last position on the grid as punishment for his collision with Lorenzo in Barcelona.

Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Aprilia rider Alvaro Bautista and Pedrosa form row five, while Ireland's Eugene Laverty (Aspar Ducati) in 16th place, Stefan Bradl on the second of the factory Aprilia machines and Jack Miller (Marc VDS Honda) are on row six.

Miller's team-mate and premier class rookie Tito Rabat was 19th ahead of Ducati test rider Michele Pirro, who is filling in for the injured Loris Baz on the Avintia Racing Desmosedici GP14.2.

At least he was honest saying the only reason he was on pole was that he was copying Rossi's lines...Lorenzo must be steaming as Dovizioso seem to have made a deal with #46 on track :)
