MotoGP Germany: Rain brings premature end to FP1

Three crashes in quick succession at the fast turn eleven precede a shower of rain, meaning events in FP1 at Sachsenring draw to an early close.
Andrea Iannone led Marc Marquez and Danilo Petrucci at the close of an FP1 session at the Sachsenring that produced a short spell of sustained drama before rain all-but brought affairs to a premature close.

Spectacular falls at turn eleven for Scott Redding, Jorge Lorenzo and Stefan Bradl dominated the opening minutes, when the track was still dry. Each crash appeared to be similar, with the rider losing the front end mid-way through the corner.

Lorenzo was taken to the medical centre for checks on a painful left hand that concluded no fractures were sustained.

Much of the pre-event talk surrounded how Michelin's new asymmetric front tyre compounds would cope through the daunting right-handed turn eleven, which is preceded by seven lefts. Each of the fallers were on the softer of the asymmetric front compounds.

Rain soon followed the flurry of crashes, mainly bringing a halt to the action. By that point, Iannone had posted the fastest time, with Marquez some 0.414s in arrears. After just seven laps though, the classification was far from conclusive.

Behind Petrucci in third, Rossi followed with Andrea Dovizioso (fifth), Pol Espargaro (sixth), Maverick Viñales (seventh) and Cal Crutchlow (eighth) completing the top eight.
