MotoGP Germany: Vinales puts Suzuki on top at Sachsenring

Maverick Vinales fastest during FP2 for the German MotoGP at Sachsenring.
Maverick Vinales added his name to the list of Turn 11 victims on a cold and overcast Friday at the Sachsenring, but shrugged the incident off to lead the MotoGP practice timesheets.

Seventh in the morning session - when Scott Redding, Jorge Lorenzo and Stefan Bradl fell at the 'waterfall' turn in quick succession, then rain halted play - Vinales was in P1 when he also lost the front of his GSX-RR through the fast, downhill right-hander.

Tito Rabat joined Vinales in the gravel soon after to make it five Friday fallers at MotoGP's most notorious turn, while 2016 title leader Marc Marquez replaced Vinales at the head of the session.

But Vinales returned to action in style, setting three fastest laps in the final five minutes to conclude the day 0.220s clear of morning pace setter Andrea Iannone (Ducati). Marquez was left third, but 0.614s behind for Repsol Honda, with Cal Crutchlow the top satellite rider in fourth for LCR Honda.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati), Aleix Espargaro (Suzuki), Hector Barbera (Avintia Ducati), Danilo Petrucci (Pramac Ducati), Scott Redding (Pramac Ducati) and Yonny Hernandez (Aspar Ducati) completed a top ten all within one-second of Vinales.

World champion Lorenzo was back on track after undergoing checks on his left hand, but a cautious 16th quickest. Lorenzo was far from the only big name outside of the top ten with Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi 14th and Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa 15th.

Tech 3 Yamaha riders Bradley Smith (11th) and Pol Espargaro (12th), plus Assen winner Jack Miller (13th), must also hope for better weather in FP3 if they are to secure direct access to Qualifying 2.
