Update: Stefan Brad declared unfit to race due to concussion.

In the end the forecasts were right and the rain did arrive on Sunday at the Sachsenring, leaving the 2.2-mile circuit soaked, and giving the MotoGP field its first taste of wet conditions this weekend.

Dani Pedrosa topped an eventful session by 0.053s from Cal Crutchlow and Jack Miller a further 0.3s back in third, as the Hondas demonstrated their ability in the rain.

It was far from plain sailing for all its riders however. Marc Marquez was extremely fortunate to escape injury after he fell at speed when entering turn eight.

The championship leader's rear tyre touched the outside kerb, which quickly led to him tumbling through the gravel at speed. Apparently uninjured Marquez took to the track late on for a practice start. He ended the session 18th.

Struggling on Saturday with front end feel, the desperate conditions will come to a relief for Scott Redding, who was fourth fastest. Front row sitter Hector Barbera was fifth, with Pol Espargaro the fastest of the Yamahas in sixth.

An all-Italian quartet followed suit with Valentino Rossi the only of the Movistar Yamaha men to make any kind of impression on the top ten. Jorge Lorenzo's desperate weekend continued apace, the Majorcan struggling down in 20th, 3.9s off the pace.

Known wet weather specialists Danilo Petrucci and Andrea Dovizioso were eighth and ninth, with Andrea Iannone completing the top ten. Aside from Marquez, Stefan Bradl was another heavy faller. The Aprilia man went down at turn seven and ha to be helped away.
