Austria's Red Bull Ring is set to become the fastest circuit on the MotoGP calendar.

Andrea Iannone covered the 4.326km track in a best lap time of 1m 23.240s during this week's private test, attended by all teams except Repsol Honda and Tech 3 Yamaha.

That means Iannone set an average speed of 187.1km/h (116.3mph), which would exceed the 182.1km/h (113.2mph) official pole lap record at Phillip Island.

Both circuits are almost exactly the same length, but the Red Bull Ring consists of just ten corners (7 right and 3 left) and Phillip Island twelve (5 right and 7 left). However, Phillip Island has a 900m main straight compared with 626m for Austria.

The Austrian race weekend, the first since 1997, will take place from August 12-14.

Barry Sheene set the fastest motorcycle GP lap of all-time with an average speed of 220.7km/h (137.1 mph) at the 1977 Belgium Grand Prix.
