Johann Zarco was able to find speed when it mattered, pushing ahead over the final ten minutes and then improving his time further to stamp his authority with pole for the Moto2 Grand Prix in Austria.

The reigning world champion holds the advantage in this seasons standings and will be in the hunt for another win following his impressive record of four podiums, three of which were victories, before the summer break and is well placed to do so following his blistering 1m 29.255s lap.

The Ajo Motorsport riders biggest rival for pole was Franco Morbidelli, but despite holding the provisional position for most of the session for Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS, when it came to the crunch he had no answer to the fast Frenchman.

They are joined on the front row by third quickest rider Tom Luthi, who looked relaxed for Garage Plus Interwetten as he mastered the track.

Marcel Schrotter was another early leader on his way to fourth on the grid for AGR Team, while Morbidelli's team-mate Alex Marquez looked more settled as he flew up to fifth on his final lap.

AGR's Axel Pons story was the reverse, his fourth lap of the Ring hanging on to his top ten position after dropping just two places following a crash.

Sam Lowes improved as the session wound down to snatch seventh for Gresini, he is joined on row three by Assen winner Taka Nakagami (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) in eighth and fellow title hopeful Alex Rins who struggled a little and hit traffic on his best lap, leaving him ninth for Paginas Amarilas HP40.

Britain's Danny Kent spent much of the session rooted to the bottom of the timesheets and in the pits before his final laps elevated him to 15th. His team-mate Miguel Oilveira had been running just outside the top ten but he ended his day in the pits instead leaving him to drop to 18th.

The Portuguese rider also missed out on top rookie honours during that time after late pace saw Rins' team-mate Edgar Pons fly up to 14th late on.
