Marc Marquez threaded his way between Pol Espargaro and Valentino Rossi at the final corner of his flying lap to snatch pole position for the Czech Republic MotoGP at Brno.
Despite the daring moment, which resulted in an instant retaliation from Rossi at turn one, Marquez broke the timing beam 0.253s quicker than Jorge Lorenzo for his fifth pole of the season.
The Repsol Honda rider's time of 1m 54.596s was also a new cirucit record.
Up to that point, last year's winner Lorenzo had dominated Saturday's sessions and Movistar Yamaha's reigning champion remains the favourite for the race - assuming it is dry.
Completing Sunday's front row will be Ducati's new MotoGP winner Andrea Iannone (+0.631s), the Italian denying injured Suzuki rider Aleix Espargaro as he progressed from sixth to third on his final lap.
Avintia Ducati's Hector Barbera produced another quick lap on the GP14.2 for fifth on the grid, with Rossi sixth and the final rider within one-second of Marquez.
Marquez starts Sunday's race with a 43-point advantage over Lorenzo and 57-point lead over Rossi. Marquez, Lorenzo and Rossi and now all tied on 63 grand prix pole positions.
Iannone's team-mate Andrea Dovizioso suffered repeated technical issues, aborting his first two runs to seek corrections to the front of his Desmosedici in the pits before setting the seventh best time - ahead of Maverick Vinales and Dani Pedrosa.
Pedrosa, Marquez's team-mate, was forced to progress through Qualifying 1 and left 1.245s from pole. Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), plus Tech 3 Yamaha team-mates Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro completed the Qualifying 2 line-up.
