MotoGP: Rossi wants to race new chassis, swingarm 'soon as possible'

"Now we have to understand when we can use. I hope as soon as possible" - Valentino Rossi.
Valentino Rossi hopes to race with a new Yamaha chassis and swingarm 'as soon as possible' following a successful post-race test at Brno on Monday.

The day got off to a slow start due to an overnight diesel spill, but conditions improved significantly in the afternoon, when Rossi went on to set the second fastest lap time, 0.371s behind team-mate Jorge Lorenzo.

"In the end it was a good day," declared Rossi, who rode for 60 laps, almost four race distances. "This morning everybody was a little bit sad because the condition of the track look quite bad. And when I entered the track - we decided to go anyway because we had some important things to test - the lap time was quite high.

"But after, when 4-5-8 bikes were on track, it cleaned and for the last two hours it was a very good test. A very good level. Because we can push, go fast. Also the time attack at the end was not so bad.

"But especially I like the new stuff. We tried a lot of different things, especially a different chassis and different swingarm. And I like.

"The feeling with the bike improved and I can enter the corner faster. I also like the bike in braking. Is not, unfortunately, a two-second step. Anyway I feel good and I hope to use as soon as possible. I have to speak with [Yamaha] but I hope we can use the chassis during this season."

The Italian, who took over second place in the world championship from Lorenzo with a runner-up finish in Sunday's wet race, explained that the chassis was making the difference on corner entry and swingarm on corner exit.

"The swingarm gives also some small advantage in acceleration, but the stability in the entry is more from the chassis," he said.

Rossi set his best lap time while using "the new stuff and normal tyres", but revealed: "We can match [the parts] - the old chassis with the new swingarm - so you can decide."

The other significant development on offer was some new Michelin tyres. Like the chassis and swingarm, Rossi credited them as a step forward - but unlike the mechanical parts they are not likely to be raced this season.

"We had two new front from Michelin, but unfortunately we speak about next year, because the tyres are very good. I like and I improve my lap time and feeling also. You can push more and the tyres give a better feeling. It is very important and I improve the lap time so I think that is a good way to work.

"After that we worked a little bit with the electronic. The ECU. Some small improvement."

Rossi is 53 points behind Honda's Marc Marquez with seven rounds to go. Marquez, third on Sunday, was also third at the test.

The Doctor previously tried a new chassis in the Barcelona post-race test and again at Assen, where it was discarded.

“Today we compared another time in another track, and in the end I prefer the standard chassis," Rossi had said at the Dutch TT. "We tried to improve the feeling with the front Michelin and gained something. But unfortunately we lose in the stability and I prefer the normal one.”

It now seems that the latest Yamaha development enhances rather than reduces stability.

Lorenzo did not try the new chassis.

I would think that Yamaha will do everything they can for Valentino so that he will beat Lorenzo and try to catchup to Marquez. There is still a chance, small one maybe, but still a chance and where Valentino is concerned, it isn't over until it's over!!
