Ducati's Andrea Iannone swooped late to deny Maverick Vinales a free practice double at Silverstone on Friday.

Esctar Suzuki rider Vinales had topped the times in the morning session and moved to the head of the leaderboard again in FP2, knocking Brno race winner and British hope Cal Crutchlow off the top spot with three minutes remaining.

However, Iannone - who developed an engine problem at the end of FP1 - launched a late attack on the factory GP16 to hold sway with a lap in 2m 01.421s, which left him three tenths clear of the young Spaniard.

Crutchlow finished the afternoon in a fine third place on the LCR Honda, 0.496s behind Iannone, while world champion Jorge Lorenzo was the leading Yamaha rider on the Movistar YZR-M1 in fifth, lapping in 2m 02.032s as he ended the opening day six tenths in arrears.

Championship leader Marc Marquez was fifth fastest on the Repsol Honda ahead of title rival Valentino Rossi on the second of the Movistar Yamaha machines, who made ground from 11th place to complete the top six in FP2. Rossi set his best lap in 2m 02.262s, ending the afternoon session eight tenths behind the Ducati of Iannone.

Italy's Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) and Vinales' team-mate Aleix Espargaro (Ecstar Suzuki) were seventh and eighth respectively, while Dani Pedrosa - who had been running as high as second in the session - finished ninth quickest on the Repsol Honda.

Britain's Scott Redding completed the top 10 on the Octo Pramac Ducati ahead of Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Avintia Racing's Hector Barbera.

Ireland's Eugene Laverty was 14th on the Aspar Ducati, one place behind Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Ducati), with Loris Baz in 15th on the Avintia Ducati.

Aussie Jack Miller, back in action at Silverstone after missing the last two rounds through injury, finished 17th on the Marc VDS Honda ahead of Aprilia's Stefan Bradl, while Alex Lowes - standing in for the injured Bradley Smith - was 19th on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha.

Lowes set his best lap in 2m 03.855s as he finished FP2 ahead of Alvaro Bautista (Aprilia) and Tito Rabat on the second of the Marc VDS Honda machines.
