MotoGP: Vinales: 'We are nearly always the champion of Friday'

'We were trying to understand the electronics when the tyre goes down and I want to be ready for the last part of the race' - Maverick Vinales.
Maverick Vinales focused electronics and tyre life during free practice at Silverstone on Friday as the Suzuki rider plans his strategy for finishing Sunday's British MotoGP race strongly.

Vinales topped the time in the morning session and completed an encouraging opening day by finishing second fastest on the GSX-RR in FP2 behind Ducati's Andrea Iannone, setting his best lap in 2m 01.721s, which left him three tenths behind Iannone.

“We are nearly always the champion of the Friday, always first or second, but honestly we improved a lot. Today we were working for the race and in the second practice I did nearly all the laps with the used tyre,” said the young Spaniard.

“We were trying to understand the electronics when the tyre goes down and I want to be ready for the last part of the race because in Austria we missed out on that I don't want that here.

“In Brno I was feeling good and in FP4 I was quite fast on used tyres so maybe it's more about the bike feels really good and I can push because I was confident – we will see. I feel good here and in Montmelo where there is many bumps I felt good also and I don't have many problems.”

Vinales fitted a fresh tyre towards the end of FP2 to push for a fast lap with uncertainty over Saturday's weather and said he had no issues with either the hard or soft Michelins or the bumpy surface at Silverstone.

“We put in a new tyre at the end because we don't know if it will rain tomorrow or not, so that's for the qualifying. It was good also to see where we can arrive and still I know we still can improve a lot on a really fast lap time, because I improved three tenths already from last year in the qualifying so that's a good feeling,” he said.

“For me, [I can improve] in sector three and four – here it is difficult to make a good line. At the end the hard one and the soft were really good; this morning I did the lap time with the hard and I was feeling quite good and this afternoon I tried the soft. With both tyres I was feeling good and we will see tomorrow which has a little more grip for make this one lap.”
