MotoGP San Marino: Dejected Aleix Espargaro 'struggling a lot'

'It's the season that I'm working more in all sense in my career but everything is going in the wrong direction' - Aleix Espargaro.
Aleix Espargaro was in downbeat mood after the Ecstar Suzuki rider slid out of tenth place at Misano.

The Spanish rider gave a frank assessment of his season to date and said he needs to make fundamental changes to try and turn his fortunes around in the last five races of the 2016 MotoGP World Championship.

“Yeah, I'm struggling a lot. It's the season that I'm working more in all sense in my career but everything is going in the wrong direction. It's impossible to work more, but maybe I need to change the way that I'm working, something I'm doing wrong. Obviously I'm not adapting to the Michelin riding style. I'm suffering a lot, so I need to understand what's going on.

“Obviously it's my fault. I'm not competitive at all. Sometimes during the season I felt a little better at some tracks, some sessions. But overall I couldn't find a good compromise. So we tried a completely different bike in FP1 here and I didn't like, but obviously we need to change something because the thing I want most in this life now is to finish the last five races close to the top guys before I leave Suzuki.”

Espargaro, who will move to Aprilia next season, said his decision to run with the hard compound Michelin front tyre backfired.

“Well everything wrong, like all the season. I had good pace before the warm-up. All weekend I was quite strong in the pace, especially the rear had a lot of grip. This morning with the medium front tyre I felt really good, but it was so hot for the race so I decided to use the hard. Obviously it was the wrong decision,” he said.

“Immediately in the race I felt it was the wrong decision. I lose the front all the time, it was very difficult to lap [even] at a really slow pace and I did nothing strange but I lose the front in the right corner – exactly the same as in qualifying, exactly the same as FP3. So very difficult weekend and obviously again I did a mistake.”

Espargaro had a good feeling with the rear tyre but ultimately he was undone by his issues with the front as his race ended in a disappointing DNF.

“For me yes, the rear grip was good. Also I couldn't make corner speed… the rear tyre really helped me and the grip was quite okay because the track was really hot. But the front I had zero, I was fighting all the time. I lose the front maybe 20 times until I crash.

“I was waiting for the full tank to go with less weight, because sometimes at the beginning it is more difficult but lap-by-lap you get better. But it was the same – I couldn't avoid the crash. I was very slow with the throttle already open and I lost the front.”
