Aragon: Lorenzo: Our potential is much more than seventh

Jorge Lorenzo cites a wrong tyre combination for a lack of speed; feels full potential is third or fourth, highlights corner entry as another area to improve.
Jorge Lorenzo feels his seventh fastest time in MotoGP FP2 does not reflect the full potential of his Yamaha M1, as a series of issues with different tyres affected his afternoon for the worse.

The Movistar Yamaha man was 0.485s off Dani Pedrosa's fastest time of the first day at Aragon, where the HRC men appeared to have an advantage on their competitors.

With four different front tyres to choose from at Aragon, Lorenzo found fault with the two medium compounds, which offered varying degrees of chattering.

In the end the reigning world champion had to choose a less-than-favourable combination to complete his final run.

“The day has not been amazing but our potential is much more than this seventh place," said Lorenzo.

"Today we had many issues with the tyres in the front, especially the hard ones. It looks like at this moment for the setting we have and my riding style with the medium tyres in the front.

“At this track we have four types of front tyre: the softest one, two mediums and a hard one. It looks like there is a lot of vibration on the front, no? A lot of chattering and the bike in the entry of the corner went away [wide]. The harder medium front I had a lot of vibration and had to stop after two laps. I try the middle one and have less vibration, but still, not perfect.

“So in the last run, because I didn't like the feeling, I used the softest one, that I had in the morning [with which] I had already done 20 laps and a new soft rear tyre because the hardest rear tyre was sliding a lot. Finally the rear was sliding a lot and I didn't have the best combination of tyres.

“So that's why I couldn't be faster. I think with a new front tyre I could be three or four tenths faster than with this soft tyre on the front. The front vibration was closing in the corners. We have to improve a lot, especially on the entry of the corners. I cannot stop the bike. But, as I told you, we are better than this seventh place of today.”

The reigning world champion also felt he could have achieved a top three or four place had it not been for these issues.

“It's why in the last run the rear tyre was pushing so much the front. I almost crashed in every corner and I have to suffer to make this 48.9s. Anyway obviously we don't have the best pace but with a new front tyre we could be in the top three or the top four today.”
