Maverick Vinales praised his Ecstar Suzuki team after set-up tweaks enabled the Silverstone MotoGP winner to put the GSX-RR onto the front row at Aragon.
Vinales qualified second fastest behind Marc Marquez and although the Spanish circuit is perhaps not the best match for the Suzuki, the young prospect hopes to be able to battle with Honda rider Marquez in Sunday's race.
“I'm really happy about this second position and honestly I was feeling really good on the bike. It was not the best track for us because there are many slow corners and it is difficult to turn the bike. But anyway we found a good set-up and for sure tomorrow we will try to make another step and try to be closer to Marc.
"I'm quite happy and confident that tomorrow we can do a good race,” said Vinales, whose time of 1m 47.748s left him six tenths behind Marquez.
“This morning, my team delivered me an improved machine that allowed me to enter the Q2 and then in the afternoon we really hit the good lap. We also worked on the pace in FP4 and I feel consistent and efficient, although I still feel we can find something to further improve.”
Vinales has a clear direction on his choice of tyres for Sunday's race, which will be decided by temperatures tomorrow at Aragon.
“Always in other races we are at the limit to decide which tyre choice to use, but anyway we are quite clear: if we have high temperatures we will use the hard front because it what's I feel more comfortable [with],” he said.
“With low temperatures we will see but I feel confident with both tyres but the rear will be difficult for the end of the race.”
