Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso was in high spirits after a strong opening day at the Japanese MotoGP at Motegi, where the Italian rider finished second fastest overall.

Dovizioso topped the times on the Desmosedici GP16 in the morning following a lap in 1m 45.786s to lead Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez by two tenths.

In FP2, Dovizioso again went to the head of the times only to be bumped back to second place in the closing stages by Movistar Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo, who edged out the factory Ducati rider by only 0.053 seconds to set the quickest time of the day in 1m 45.151s.

"I'm really happy about the start of today because the speed is there and it is always important in the first day to start in this way. This afternoon, with the used tyre, we did a really good time and this was really important," Dovizioso said.

"Still we have a lot of work to do because it is not easy to manage the characteristics of the tyre, especially in this track because of the hard braking and it is not the best characteristic of Michelin.

"So we have to follow this characteristic and we have to improve the way to enter because we can't use too much pressure on the front brake. Apart from that, I am happy," he added.

"Most of the riders used a hard tyre on the rear so still we have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to understand exactly the pace of the fastest riders but we are there, so I am happy."
