MotoGP Japan: Fifth fastest Crutchlow happy to be in the mix

Cal Crutchlow is seeking improvements in "two or three corners" ahead of qualifying; "happy enough" with fifth fastest time in FP2.
Cal Crutchlow downplayed his outright speed on Friday afternoon, stating, “it wasn't a bad day,” despite placing well inside the top six in MotoGP FP2 for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Coming to Japan on the back of a fine run of form, Crutchlow's speed was apparent around the Twin Ring Motegi circuit as he ended Friday afternoon fifth fastest, just one place and 0.198s behind Marc Marquez, the quickest Honda of the day.

Crutchlow has spoken of his struggles to overcome the Honda RC213V's acceleration deficit, particularly on the exit of low gear corners – of which there are many at Motegi.

The Englishman said he was “happy enough” with his performance on day one, and feels that with some set-up tinkering to aid feel through “two or three corners,” the LCR Honda's pace could be further enhanced.

“It was not a bad day,” said Crutchlow, currently sixth in the world championship standings.

“Overall I'm happy enough with the way the bike is working. We need to improve a lot in a couple of areas. There are two or three corners on the circuit where we're struggling a little. We're happy though.

“We tried some different settings with the bike and wasted a bit of time in the two sessions but we already had the plan to do this this weekend. We are continuing to look at the data in the hope that we can make some improvements ahead of tomorrow.”
