Jorge Lorenzo braved the pain of Saturday's huge highside to hold second place for much of Sunday's Japanese MotoGP.

But the Spaniard's efforts would count for nothing when he fell from his Movistar Yamaha with just five laps to go, while pushing to stay clear of Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso.

Lorenzo - like most of the grid - chose the medium front and soft rear tyre combination. Afterwards, Lorenzo regretted his choice while also admitting he simply pushed too hard in his haste to hold off Dovizioso.

"I'm very disappointed, because I made a mistake. I tried to push too much when the bike was not working well with the tyres," said Lorenzo, who led the opening three laps before being passed by Marc Marquez and later team-mate Valentino Rossi, before the Italian crashed out on lap 7.

"In Arag?n we made a good decision with the tyres and this time it was the opposite. We chose the wrong front tyre, with the soft I think I would have made a better race, because my front tyre on the first laps was vibrating and closing. I didn't have a good feeling, that's why I couldn't keep up with the pace of Marquez.

"Finally, because Dovizioso was coming, I pushed more than before in that corner and the front tyre didn't give me any support or feedback and I crashed.

"It's a pity because here we had a great chance to win. The crash [on Saturday] made the race more difficult because of the pain and also with the mistake on the front tyre. So we lost a great opportunity to win."

Lorenzo's accident, combined with the Rossi's fall, confirmed race winner Marquez as the 2016 champion with three rounds to go.

"I want to congratulate Marquez because he didn't have an advantage from his bike this year and he was the most consistent rider, so he deserves this championship," Lorenzo said.

Meanwhile, the Yamaha riders remain just 14-points apart in their duel for the runner-up spot heading into next weekend's Australian race.

"I don't know what's going to happen at Phillip Island. In the pre-season we weren't very competitive, but now almost one year later everything can happen. With these tyres, that you can lose the control and crash very soon - everyone can crash and the points can vary a lot."
