MotoGP Australia: Lorenzo ready for 'vice champion' battle

'Phillip Island is going to be a bit strange because the fight for the championship is over, but I would like to do a great race and try to win' - Jorge Lorenzo.
Jorge Lorenzo wants to finish the 2016 MotoGP season as the 'vice champion' before his move to Ducati.

Lorenzo's outside mathematical chance of challenging Marc Marquez for the premier class crown ended when the Movistar Yamaha rider fell with five laps to go at Motegi in Japan.

The Mallorcan remains 14 points behind team-mate Valentino Rossi in the standings with three rounds to go and with the title outcome now decided, Lorenzo is eager to finish second best.

“It was a shame in Motegi, but we were at least able to fight for the victory despite the wrong decision with the tyre. My crash and Vale's gave Marc the title but honestly he was the most consistent rider,” he said.

“Now we have to fight for the second position in the championship, though the important thing - and why we are here - is to be a champion. Phillip Island is going to be a bit strange because the fight for the championship is over, but I would like to do a great race and try to win. That's my goal for the next three races and take the vice champion title as well.”

Lorenzo is historically strong at Phillip Island and clinched two second places in the premier class in 2010 and 2012. From that point on the three-time MotoGP champion has not finished off the podium, securing victory in 2013 and two more second places in 2014 and 2015.
