The second free practice session at Phillip Island in Australia was eventually cancelled altogether due to heavy rain.
FP2 was delayed as conditions worsened in the afternoon and when the session did finally commence, it was red flagged after 15 minutes.
With the track temperature as low as 11.6 degrees, only six riders posted a time in the afternoon and the morning's session was considerably quicker, with Britain's Cal Crutchlow fastest overall on the LCR Honda.
Spain's Hector Barbera topped the weather-affected FP2 on the factory Ducati as he fills in for Andrea Iannone, setting a time of 1m 51.958s as he finished two seconds ahead of Aussie rider Mike Jones, who is riding Barbera's GP14.2 for Avintia Racing.
By contrast, Crutchlow's time in FP1 was 1m 40.957s as he led the way from Pramac Ducati's Danilo Petrucci.
Valentino Rossi also ventured out on his Movistar Yamaha in the afternoon after the Italian's best laps in FP1 were cancelled due to a technical infringement, with Rossi exceeding the lap limit (10) on the extra-soft Michelin front tyre.
The nine-time world champion is languishing in 20th on the combined times ahead of final free practice and qualifying at Phillip Island on Saturday. Rossi was one place behind Jorge Lorenzo in 19th overall, who only completed a handful of laps.
Home hero and Assen winner Jack Miller (Marc VDS Honda) was third on the combined times after his lap in FP1, ahead of new world champion Marc Marquez, who was only five hundredths slower in fourth.
Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso was fifth on the Desmosedici GP16 while Suzuki's Maverick Vinales rounded out the top six, ending the day within a second of Crutchlow's time.
American Nicky Hayden, who was called in to replace the injured Dani Pedrosa in the Repsol Honda team, was ninth overall on the RCV.
It remains to be seen if FP2 will be restarted on Saturday or scrapped altogether. The top ten riders in FP3 tomorrow will progress to Q2.
