Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso says he managed his race strategy to perfection as the Italian rider clinched an excellent fourth place in the Australian MotoGP round at Phillip Island.
Dovizioso had been in the hunt for the rostrum places but lost out in the final laps to the hard-charging Maverick Vinales on the Ecstar Suzuki. The 30-year-old was unable to hit back at Vinales after encountering rear tyre fade on the Desmosedici GP16 but Dovizioso had few complaints overall.
“Almost, I get a podium – I did a really great pace and I am so happy about that. For sure I fight for the podium for a lot of laps but I am happy because I managed everything in a perfect way, because in some corners I lose a lot,” he said.
“But I have positive corners and a positive straight because I gained a lot there and I used all of these things in a perfect way. I was able to finish the race like this but with the people on the podium, at the end the rear tyre dropped too much and I couldn't stay with them.
“If I think that last year here I did one of my worst races, managing to finish the race at Phillip Island with a fourth place is something really positive for me. I am pleased with the way we worked throughout the weekend, but especially with the way we are constantly improving the bike,” he added.
“Overall the bike worked quite well and I am really happy about that. From Aragon we did some big changes and I think that we are closer.”
