MotoGP Malaysia: Marquez quick to adapt to new surface in FP1

Marc Marquez is the quickest of the MotoGP contingent on Sepang's new surface, leading Maverick Viñales and Scott Redding in FP1.
Marc Marquez was keen to dispel recent memories of his first DNF of the 2016 season by topping the first MotoGP free practice session at the resurfaced Sepang circuit.

The recently crowned world champion crashed out of the lead in the Phillip Island race five days ago, but was quickly up and running at Sepang, a track at which the final turn has been remodelled considerably ahead of the 2016 event.

In the end Marquez's fastest time of 2m 1.210s was two tenths quicker than Maverick Viñales, and just over two seconds off Dani Pedrosa's outright lap record – not a bad effort, considering many riders had complained of the track surface boasting a layer of dirt upon inspection on Thursday.

Marquez, Viñales and Valentino Rossi all spent periods at the top of the timesheets during the 45 minutes, but eventually the Ducatis of Scott Reddding and Andrea Iannone pushed the Movistar Yamaha back to fifth.

Indeed Redding's fastest time – posted at the close of his third run - was a drastic improvement (just under two seconds) than his previous best, hinting that new tyres played a part.

With Rossi fifth, Hector Barbera was sixth, ahead of Aleix Espargaro and surprise package Yonny Hernandez. Alvaro Bautista once again showed well on Aprilia's ever-improving RS-GP in ninth, a place ahead of reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Times were fairly close, with Cal Crutchlow in 13th just over one second slower than Marquez's fastest time. There was a small crash for Jack Miller mid-way through the session. Thankfully the Australian was unharmed.
