At the scene of his greatest race, Jorge Lorenzo began his final weekend in Yamaha colours in the best possible manner, setting an electric pace in MotoGP FP1 in Valencia.

Determined to sign off in fine style before a high-profile move to Ducati, Lorenzo was 0.387s faster than team-mate Valentino Rossi, with Marc Marquez just 0.010s behind in third.

Cool, dry conditions greeted the riders for the opening session of the season finale, allowing Lorenzo to lap within a second of his fastest race time from the tense 2015 encounter.

Andrea Dovizioso was the fastest of the Ducatis in fourth, ahead of an impressive Pol Espargaro, who lay inside the top three for much of the 45-minute session.

Another rider bidding farewell to a manufacturer, Maverick Vi?ales set the sixth fastest time, just ahead of team-mate Aleix Espargaro. Jack Miller (eighth) and Scott Redding (ninth) also started promisingly, placing inside the top ten.

Andrea Iannone was tenth fasest, 1.2s off Lorenzo's best time. Returning from a broken right collarbone and a three-race absence, Dani Pedrosa was a promising twelfth, two places ahead of Cal Crutchlow.

There was excitement at the sight of KTM's new RC16 MotoGP machine, making its debut at a race weekend. Test rider Mika Kallio was 22nd, 2.9s off the fastest pace.
