Marc Marquez signalled his intentions for the weekend ahead by topping the third MotoGP free practice session at Valencia, but fellow Catalan Maverick Vi?ales was close behind.

Second on Friday, Marquez bettered his previous best lap by a full half second to get within 0.2s of the outright circuit record. Yet Vi?ales wasn't far away (+0.103s), showing once again that Suzuki's GSX-RR is among the best packages on the grid.

Following his second ever MotoGP win at Sepang, Andrea Dovizioso was third, with Dani Pedrosa posting a heroic performance in fourth with his collarbone and leg injuries in mind.

Friday pace setter Jorge Lorenzo was fifth, having failed to improve on his best time from FP2, with Pol Espargaro once again out-pacing factory rider Valentino Rossi in sixth.

Aleix Espargaro (seventh), Andrea Iannone (eighth) and Rossi (ninth) were tightly packed in the midst of the lower top ten places, with another walking wounded rider - Bradley Smith - impressing in tenth.

The session means Cal Crutchlow (eleventh), Scott Redding (twelfth) and Jack Miller (15th) are among the riders participating in this afternoon's Q1 session.

KTM's Mika Kallio made strides after stating his disappointment at his Friday times. The Finn took the RC16 to within 2.5s of Marquez's time, and was a full 0.8s quicker than his Friday best.
