MotoGP Valencia: Lorenzo, Iannone biggest surprise

"Maverick's performance I already expected... Lorenzo maybe is the biggest surprise" - Marc Marquez.
Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez felt that Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Iannone produced the biggest surprises on day one of the Valencia test.

Tuesday marked Lorenzo's debut for Ducati, while Iannone completed his first laps for Suzuki.

Triple world champion Lorenzo finished the day in third, 0.122s from the top, while Iannone was quick from his very first laps on the GSX-RR. The Italian eventually slipped back to seventh, albeit just 0.235s from new Yamaha signing Maverick Vinales, after a fall interrupted his progress.

Marquez felt that Vinales being so fast was not a surprise, but that many people had doubted Lorenzo and Iannone.

"Maverick's performance I already expected, because the Yamaha is a bike that is working well and he is a fast rider," said Marquez.

"Lorenzo maybe is the biggest surprise. Already on the first day with the Ducati, some people said with his riding style he would not adapt, but I already was thinking that he would be fast - and he is fast.

"Also Iannone, with the Suzuki. People said 'Suzuki is not so good', but he is fast like on the Ducati."

Marquez set the fourth fastest lap time while testing the new Honda engine.

I expected him to be up there all along. Like I said in the past and in one of the current threads, it would have been silly to believe that Lorenzo would be slower than Dovi or Iannone. If those guys can be fast, surely a rider like Lorenzo can be fast. We're not dealing with the GP7 here! I didn't think J.Lo would be outside of the top 5 honestly, but he did even better. I was impressed by Vinales and Iannone too. Could we have a 4 horse race next season? :)

I don't think many expected Lorenzo to be in the top 10 let alone the top 3. Hopefully once the wings come off we still see him putting good times in and looking as comfortable as he did today. I'm still surprised at just how smooth the Ducati looks with him onboard and the lean angle seems promising too!
