MotoGP Valencia: Rossi: 'Great debut' for Vinales

"Vinales was able to do a 1m '29, which is a huge lap time... It was a great debut" - Valentino Rossi.
Maverick Vinales completed a perfect Yamaha debut by leading both days of official MotoGP testing at Valencia.

The Suzuki race winner edged out team-mate Valentino Rossi by 0.020s on day one, then lowered his lap time by one-second to be the only rider under the 1m 30s barrier on day two.

Yamaha did not allow Vinales to speak to the media - despite Suzuki saying they had given Vinales permission to do so - presumably because of the ban placed on Jorge Lorenzo from talking at Ducati.

Nevertheless, Rossi summed up his new team-mate's performance "Vinales was quite impressive already from yesterday and today even more so, because he was able to do a 1m '29, which is a huge lap time. So I think it was a great debut for him."

Honda's reigning world champion Marc Marquez was 0.196s behind Vinales, with Rossi seventh and 0.734s slower as he compared the 2016 and 2017 versions of the M1.

Rossi and Vinales will test again at Sepang next week, while their factory rivals head for a private test at Jerez.

Quite some debut. Not much off JL's remarkable qualifying record, and faster than VR's qualifying time from Sunday. No mishaps either.(?) Wonder does so good a time this early suggest he has the potential to go significantly faster, or is it perhaps that the bike is very similar to the Suzuki he's been riding? Wonder if there are any other up and comers of similar capability that haven't got on a good bike yet? Here's as before hoping that MV will be shielded within the team and be well managed since past form suggests that faint(?) praise is likely to turn to something else in the event that he continues to deliver that sort of pace. Does anybody have any feel for how mentally resilient he is?
