Not even a colossal fall on Wednesday could dampen Andrea Iannone's first impressions of Suzuki's GSX-RR, as the Italian took little time to adapt to the new bike and team.
Iannone crashed at the fast turn twelve early into the second day of testing at Valencia, but was soon up to speed, ending the test fourth overall, 0.6s off pace setter Maverick Viñales.
Despite an aching right elbow, Iannone was able to make a fair assessment of the GSX-RR's strengths and weaknesses, pointing to its agile chassis and strong base as reasons to leave Valencia in a positive frame of mind.
“I have a very good impression of the bike. I'm very happy. We work a lot in this second day. We understand also a lot in some areas because we get the information.
“This is very important because I think the bike has a very good base. It has a very good chassis. I ride very well. The feeling with the bike is very good. But I think it's normal. We have some parts, some areas that are not at 100 percent.
“I'm happy for this because we have a point to improve. I talk a lot with the engineers and my team, now I have more information. We have a good chance to work.
“The bike is very fast inside the corner. Inside the corner we have high speed. This is a good point for me.”
On where the bike can improve, Iannone said, “In general, I think it's very important for us to improve the first part of the acceleration, especially in second and third gear.
“I think we have a good chance to improve this part because the engine has a good power. In the first part the acceleration is a little bit difficult. It doesn't use at 100 percent the power.”
Asked about the fall at the beginning of the day, Iannone added, “My elbow is swollen. I have a lot of pain. I ride with pain all day. But it's very important that we ride today. I tried my best but didn't push at 100 percent because it's very dangerous for me if I crashed another time. But it's OK.
“It's very strange to explain because I came out of the pit. When I arrive in the braking before turn twelve I touch the brake and I lose the front immediately. I think it's the temperature. This morning it was a little bit low. I think this didn't help.”
