MotoGP Star of the Year vote - 6th: Andrea Dovizioso

After a runner-up finish in the Qatar season opener, Andrea Dovizioso suffered an appalling run of bad luck.

First the factory Ducati rider was taken out of second place - by his own team-mate Andrea Iannone - within sight of the chequered flag in Argentina. Just a week later, he was again punted out of a rostrum place - the unlikely assailant being Dani Pedrosa, who lost control under braking.

Dovizioso was then forced to retire from the Spanish MotoGP after a water pump failure, before making a mistake of his own in the following French MotoGP, when he slid out of third place after a 'two-degree error' in lean angle.

While he returned to the podium just before the summer break in Germany, more mental anguish was to follow when he narrowly lost out on the honour of Ducati's first MotoGP win since 2007 in Austria.

Dovi's long Ducati efforts - he has been at the team since 2013 - were finally rewarded with victory in the wet Malaysian MotoGP, his first grand prix win since 2009, which also made him the last of this year's nine different winners.

The down-to-earth Italian finished as the highest placed Desmosedici rider in the world championship standings and was selected ahead of Iannone to continue at Ducati alongside new superstar signing Jorge Lorenzo, surely in part due to his calm handling of the early season adversity.

About the vote:
Rather than repeat the riders' championship standings, Crash.net's MotoGP Star of the Year poll (which began in 2008) expects viewers to take into account factors such as machinery, performance relative to a team-mate, riding style, experience, injuries, progress and personality as much as race results.

Over 70,000 votes were cast for the 2016 poll, with viewers awarding each of this year's participants with a mark out of ten. The average score for each rider was then used to compile the final results.

7th Jorge Lorenzo SPA Movistar Yamaha 6.2
8th Jack Miller AUS Marc VDS Honda 5.7

Whatifthatis ....I'm pleased :) I expected Dovi to be 5th.....maybe I should have voted. Guna4699 ...Despite your 'disagrees' I'm inclined to agree with your post. If Mav beats Rossi fairly and Rossi enjoys the battle then I can't see any problems. The fall out with Jorge was not due to getting beaten by him.

@ Gunna & Codger Guys give us a break that old record has been played to death why not talk about something important,we all know you two guy's are rossi fanboys and that's great but it is almost 2017 and the record book's show JLO won the title in 2015 and all the hand wringing in the world is not going to change it so just let it go and enjoy the racing.
