Marc Marquez became the first motorcycle rider to break the two-minute lap time at Silverstone, on his way to a close pole position for the British MotoGP.

The reigning world champion and 2017 title leader was visibly on the limit, making multiple saves as both the front and rear of his Repsol Honda cried enough before putting it all together for the new lap record.

But it was only enough to beat Valentino Rossi by just 0.084s, while home hero Cal Crutchlow completed a front row covered by just 0.165s.

While Honda riders Marquez and Crutchlow both chose the hard front and soft rear tyre combination, while Rossi ran the medium front.

Row two of the grid will be formed by Rossi's Movistar Yamaha team-mate Maverick Vinales(medium-soft), plus the factory Ducatis of Jorge Lorenzo (medium-soft) and Andrea Dovizioso (hard-soft).

Johann Zarco, Aleix Espargaro and Jonas Folger were the final riders within one-second of Marquez.

Pol Espargaro will start tenth for KTM tenth, after a fall, while Scott Redding begins his final home grand prix for Pramac Ducati from twelfth on the grid.

Team-mate Danilo Petrucci was among the riders to miss out on Qualifying 2, falling during Qualifying 1, in which Dani Pedrosa and Jonas Folger were fastest.

Look out for Rossi tomorrow.  Dry weather forecast, but yeah, to watch MM ride his Honda at the limit, takes your breath away.

MM has completely rewritten the rule book. Best ever in my opinion. No one has ridden a motorcycle like that before. Must be galling for everyone else.

Beatiful classic Márquez lap, to the limit.

Didnt get to see anything of Rossis lap

MM was all over the place but not necessary quicker than Rossi and Cal. He was just overriding the bike and if it was for Rossi losing 3 tenths in the last sector noone woud be praising his madman style.

Even if he didn't get pole with that riding everybody will be praising him for the skills and attitude he shows everytime he gets on that bike.... it's riders like MM93 that keeps the sport fascinating to watch...

Agree... go to MotoGp just to watch MM ride the Honda... breath taking. The other rider whom created a similar feel was CS. Anyway Kudos to Honda, they have two bikes on the front grid.
