Danilo Petrucci was left to rue what might have been as he was narrowly denied his maiden premier class victory at Misano.

The Pramac Ducati rider led for most of the race but was overtaken by Marc Marquez on the final lap, who went on to win by just over one second.

Petrucci was happy with another MotoGP podium finish in difficult conditions, but he admitted he had mixed feelings as a coveted win eluded him.

“Very mixed feelings and for sure I am happy to be on the podium again in Italy, but I led the race for I don’t know how many laps and I was quite scared because this morning we understood that the track was very slippery, especially in some corners,” said the Italian rider.

“When I was in front after Jorge [Lorenzo] crashed, I say OK, let’s see what’s going on. I tried many times to push but with eight laps to go, I took a very big risk in turn 6, so I said OK, maybe Marc is going to pass me, but after two minutes I knew he was too clever to stay in front and make the rhythm.

“I thought to let him past to make the rhythm, but in the warm-up he was stronger and I was scared to lose him, so I tried to stay in front all the race. I pushed with two laps to go but in the penultimate lap he did a great last corner and passed me in turn 1,” he added.

“I tried to go in at turn 4 and I saw him a little bit wide, but I lost the steer and my bike stayed up only because I am very tall and I try with the knee to stay up. He did an incredible last lap and I am a little bit sad about second place but I have no regrets because I tried all the race. He did an incredible last lap so he deserves this win today.”

Petrucci attempted to shake off Marquez on a few occasions during the race but said it was difficult to even remain upright on the wet but drying track at the Marco Simoncelli Circuit.

“When I was leading the race I was not pushing so much and I think all the riders were not pushing so much because the conditions of the track were very difficult. I only tried to stay up and be as fast as possible but I knew Marc was very strong,” he said.

“I hope for Dovi to maybe be with us but then I tried to win the race but Dovi was a bit too far. Maybe two or three times during the race I tried to push to make some gap with Marc because I knew he was very strong in the last laps. It was not possible to create a gap and in fact I did not push all the race, but I was at the limit and only to stay up was very difficult.”

Good race for Dan Petrucci..

Thjat was a great ride from Petrucci, and he will learn a lot from it. There's no smae in being just beaten by Marquez. He is one of the all time best. Petrucci rode a great race. His time will come...

One of the nicest funniest guys in the paddock

He's a great wet rider.

You should be proud of your self. I m sure if Vale was there it will be different podium. Well done Danilo once again you prove your skil in wet.

I wanted him to win so badly today. Such a nice guy and always a deamon in the wet. With his recent string of good results I was really hoping he'd get his first win, but oh well. I think he just gets nervious in the last few laps when he has to fight so hard, but I'm sure with experience he'll be able to avoid those little mistakes that cost him a few tenths

He is Ducati's Johann Zarco, a top class, much deserving future MotoGP star, only overshadowed by some of the top aliens.   I much like him as a rider.  An amazing talent, especailly in wet conditions, his first victory can't be far away.  If only the race had been called a few laps earlier.

Danilo is riding extremelly well in the last few races. If Ducati didn't have multi year contract with Lorenzo, Ducatti will jump right on to secure the services of Petrucci.  And why in hell Jorge has got to race as if scared bat off his cage!  He sometime always gets away at the begenning of each race but either, rans out of steam or making stupid mistake and crashes.

Dovi is showing that despite getting paid a minute amount in comparo to Jorge, he is the Ducati master. Perhaps he can consolidate and win the 2017 championship if anything happening to Marquez.
