Motegi race winner Andrea Dovizioso says MotoGP World Championship leader Marc Marquez is the favourite for victory this weekend at Phillip Island.

Dovizioso chalked up his fifth win of the season after a thrilling head-to-head with Marquez in the wet in Japan, reducing the Repsol Honda rider’s title cushion to 11 points with three races left.

The Italian anticipates a more difficult weekend in Australia against Marquez but is taking heart from a strong ride at Phillip Island last year, when he finished fourth on the factory Ducati following a close fight with Maverick Vinales.

“For sure Phillip Island is one of Marquez’s favourite tracks, and the situation will probably be a bit more difficult for us, but last year we did a good race and so we must try and work in the best possible way throughout the weekend,” said Dovizioso.

“There are now just three rounds left until the end and anything can happen: we must try and always be fast at every circuit and in every condition. On paper we are not favourites for the win in Australia but we’ll be fighting as hard as ever.”

Iannone did very well in 2015 in that year's four-way battle for the lead.  One of the best races you'll ever see, start to finish.  But Dovi's right, this isn't one of his more favored tracks.  Sepang would be though.

It may be damage control this weekend, then rolls reversed the following, between him and Marquez.

I believe in Dovi. But both deserve it

Maybe Jorge can surprise given the fast flowing nature of PI and more or less a full season under his belt on the bike

I wear my Repsol Honda shirt to work on the Fridays before race weekends.  But how can you not respect the hell out of Dovi?  He's such a solid guy, and he is putting up the some of the best battles against MM this year, if not ever.  Especially last lap in Motegi!!  Ballsy riding from both of them.

Sure I want to see MM take the title, but I won't compain if Dovi does.

Agree - Well said.  And it is not as if one of them has lucked into a race victory during the year - every victory both has had, has been earned fair and square.  Let's hope it is not settled by one of them DNF'ing - rather a fight to the finish line with the bikes upright.

TWOWHEELSAREBETTER - No racer "deserves" anything.

yes and no. you can't be pure mathematics there's more nuance than that to racing and any other sport, otherwise what's the point in watching

if somehow these two crashed out or had DNFs the last races and Vinales became champion by walkover, he would have his name on the trophy but be an undeserving champion

If it dry and the bloody tyres don't dictate, sure MM is favorite.

Pedrosa has finished a few races ahead of Dovi while Lorenzo has not finished ahead of Marquez not even in a single race. It's impossible for Ducati to fight for the championship with such a handicap. Dovi deserved a better teammate and Ducati a better no. 2. If Dovi loses or wins the championship will be the first rider to had zero help from a teammate what a shame.
