What should Dorna's red line be?


This weekend's Japanese Grand Prix is being billed as crunch time in terms of the drawn-out negotiations between Dorna and the MotoGP manufacturers over the 2014 technical rules.

Dorna is pushing for the introduction of a control ECU and rev limit, which it says will help cut costs, tempt new manufacturers, improve the show and reduce the performance gap between the factory prototypes and privateer CRTs, which now comprise almost half of the grid.

The three remaining manufacturers - Honda, Yamaha and Ducati, represented by the MSMA - are heavily against such technical restrictions, citing open development of electronics, which can be passed down to their road machines, as a major justification for their involvement in MotoGP.

Honda has gone as far as to suggest it would switch its focus to the World Superbike Championship if a control ECU was forced upon them, although that threat has been somewhat blown out of the water by the news that Dorna will run both MotoGP and WSBK from next season.

But the MSMA members could still walk away from MotoGP - just as they left WSBK at the end of 2003 due to a disagreement over the technical rules. Ducati was the only factory to continue on that occasion, and the Italian company would again seem most likely to stick around if the negotiations go against the manufacturers.

So what do you think Dorna's priority should be when negotiating with the MotoGP manufacturers at Motegi?

1. MotoGP must have a control ECU and rev limit, negotiate only the details and be prepared to let the manufacturers leave.
2. Keep the manufacturers in MotoGP at all costs, even if it means abandoning the control ECU and rev limit.
